Kenyan police brutality against journalist

Published on: 24 July, 2024

Kenyan media has called a rally over alleged police brutality against journalists covering anti-government protests.

In recent days one local journalist was shot and wounded, and another high-profile columnist detained in what police claimed was mistaken identity.

Local media also reports threats by politicians and other incidents of intimidation.

Kenya has a vibrant media industry, which routinely exposes corruption within government and the political establishment.
But the Kenya Union of Journalists and Kenya Editors Guild say freedom of the press is threatened in the way authorities are responding to coverage of the ongoing protests.
