Just before the turn of the century, the US city of Chicago decided to back a global music group featuring a diverse group of musicians and instruments.
Since then, a Palestinian-American co-director and his Chilean Pakistani American partner have turned the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra into a blend of global music and, they say, set an example to a divided world.
The orchestra comprises musicians from Nigeria, Peru, Chile, Palestine, Egypt, Taiwan, India, Europe and the UK, and boasts a range of instruments incl djembe, tabla, Chinese ruan, Indian percission and a Mongolian horsehair fiddle, and orchestra members who sing in a range of languages.
