Candidates excluded from Senegal’s upcoming election are going to court to postpone the vote.
They include Karim Wade (pro: WAH-DAY), son of former president Abdoulaye Wade.
The vote’s set for March 24th, almost a month late following a crisis sparked by outgoing president Macky Sall’s decision – later overturned – to postpone the ballot.
Campaigning began March 9th.
Several politicians want the election pushed back to June, and the candidates’ list redone.
They claim the application process was flawed.
They are to lodge a challenge at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
The court’s ruling is expected within 72 hours.
The Constitutional Council, Senegal’s top constitutional body, published the candidates’ list in January.
The council excluded Wade because of his dual French and Senegalese nationality.
Hundreds of political prisoners are due to be released under an amnesty law adopted by the country’s national assembly March 6th.
There are hopes they will be freed.
Detainees include opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and his chosen election candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
