South African Parliament will debate closing the Israeli embassy and suspending diplomatic ties with Israel in protest over the war on Gaza.

The debate comes amid growing tensions, and frequent Palestine solidarity rallies – some ending in confrontation with pro-Israel rallies.

The motion has been called the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters.

It’s likely to be supported by the ruling African National Congress, which has long likened the Palestinian struggle to apartheid.

South Africa wants the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel’s leadership for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. South Africa already recalled all diplomats from Israel and has demarche (protested against) Israeli ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky over statements.

Parliament does have the authority to order the closure of the embassy if it’s able to get the majority of votes, but that would not happen on Thursday.
