Bangladesh’s government is continuing to crack down on opposition members and supporters who are calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down ahead of general elections in January.
Around 10,000 opposition members and supporters have reportedly been arrested in a nationwide crackdown following a major rally in Dhaka on October 28th, attended by an estimated over 100,000 protesters.
At least three people were killed during the rally.
The country’s leading opposition figure Mirza Fahkrul Islam Alamgir of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is among those detained.
PM Hasina is seeking a fourth consecutive term in January’s elections. Her government has been accused of corruption, rights abuses, and oppression of opposition.
