More protests are expected, after at least one garment worker was killed on Wednesday in protests by workers demanding better pay, bringing the total of killed workers to at least three, since major protests started last week.

Garment workers unions on Tuesday rejected a 50% pay rise decided by the government on Tuesday, which would bring the current wage from USD 75 to 113, starting December 1st.

Workers say they are not earning a living wage and are demanding an increase to around USD 200.

At least 600 factories shut down, with some ransacked and torched during major protests last week.

The country’s more than 3,500 garment factories account for around 85% of its annual exports.

Around 4million workers are employed in the industry, a majority being women.

The factories produce for major brands such as H&M, Zara and Levi’s.
