UK/A barge to house asylum seekers

Published on: 6 June, 2023

A barge intended to house up to 500 single adult male asylum seekers is expected to berth at Portland Port in Dorset sometime in JUNE, following refurbishment work in Falmouth, Cornwall.

There were reports that a multi-agency emergency planning exercise would take place on to test elements of the plans and command structures.

The first 50 asylum seekers to be housed by the British Government onboard the Bibby Stockholm are due to arrive in mid to late June.

It will be moored in Dorset for at least 18 months.

The government says this housing will reduce the “unsustainable pressure” on the UK asylum system.

Some locals are opposing the plan.
