The four couples allegedly tried to traffic children from the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A Zambian immigration official and a Congolese hospitality worker also are charged.

The group had claimed they legally adopted the children, aged between one and three years old.

All but the Congolese accused are out on bail.
