The UK Government is expected to announce plans to prevent master’s students from bringing family members to the UK with them, in an effort to cut net migration numbers.
Prime Minister Sunak is under pressure, particularly from Home Secretary Suella Braverman, to bring down migration
as promised in their 2019 manifesto.
New figures to be released by the Office of National Statistics on Thursday will show a sharp rise in net migration to the UK in 2022, with the bulk of visas being given to overseas students, followed by work visas partly driven by NHS shortages and Ukrainian refugees.
The government has already faced criticism over its tough stance on people crossing the channel on small boats.
