Leaders from across the Western Hemisphere gather in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas.
They are focusing on migration.
According to AP, the Los Angeles Declaration “is expected to be a brief call to action that supporters hope will guide countries on hosting people fleeing violence and persecution and searching for more economic stability.”
‘Let’s come together in a coherent way and construct a framework so we can all work together to make this situation more humane and more manageable,’” said Brian Nichols, assistant U.S. secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs.
A large migrant caravan left Tapachula on the Mexico-Guatemala border on Monday and head north to the United States.
Its numbers are expected to swell in the coming days and may reach 15,000 people.
The largest number of migrants are expected to come from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, three countries whose leaders have not been invited to the summit.
But there are also Haitians, Salvadorans, Hondurans, Guatemalans and even citizens of India, Bangladesh,
and several African countries.
The US has been the most popular destination for asylum-seekers since 2017.
Mexico has tried to contain migrants to the south, far from the U.S. border.
