UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet arrived in China on Monday for a six-day visit.
The US has warned it was “deeply concerned” about Bachelet’s visit based on an understanding of restrictions the UN chief will be subjected to in China.
Bachelet will visit Xinjiang region where human rights groups accuse China of human rights abuses against mainly Muslim Uyghurs.
According to Reuters, she will not have media representatives traveling with her.
China’s ruling Communist Party is accused of confining people to internment camps, forcibly separating families and carrying out forced sterilisations in Xinjiang.
Bachelet will issue a statement and hold a presser on May 28th at the end of the visit.
In addition to Xinjiang She will visit Guangzhou, Kashgar.
This is the first visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to China since 2005.
