Due to an important Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, a nationwide curfew has been lifted on Sunday.
Protesters are still demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya over the current economic crisis.
“Given the economic situation of the government and other constraints, we are not having this year’s state festival at the Kuragala temple as planned,” a Buddhist Affairs ministry official told AFP.
On Thursday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed veteran opposition politician Ranil Wickremesinghe as the island nation’s prime minister after a week of violent clashes that left at least 9 people dead and over 300 injured.
Ranil Wickremesinghe’s return to the role as PM has failed to appease anti-government protesters.
