India’s northeast is home to one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world. but it’s been thinning out because of deforestation.

Last January The Print newspaper said that “In the last two years, India’s forest and tree cover has risen marginally, but its most densely populated forests — in the Northeast region — saw the most deforestation, according to the India State of Forest Report, 2021.”

India’s total tree and forest cover rose by 2,261 sq. km since 2019 and now stands at 8,09,537 sq. km (80.9 million hectares)  https://theprint.in/environment/india-sees-small-rise-in-forest-tree-cover-but-1020-sq-km-of-deforestation-in-northeast/803234/

The government says overall forest area has marginally increased over the last two years – but ecologists are disputing some of those findings.
