A New Zealand navy ship carrying 250,000 liters of water and other life-saving supplies arrived in Tonga, six days after it was hit by a volcanic eruption and tsunami that caused extensive damage.

Aid from Australia and China is also reaching the country.

More naval vessels from Australia, New Zealand, and Britain are en route.

Tonga has insisted on contactless foreign aid missions as it tries to keep the coronavirus at bay. After a member tested positive for the virus onboard, an Australian aid flight was forced to return to base.

The Red Cross said saltwater from the tsunami and volcanic ash were polluting the drinking water sources of tens of thousands of people.

Tonga’s small outer islands have suffered extensive damage as shown by “alarming” images taken by New Zealand Defence Force reconnaissance flights.
