South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa testified before a judicial enquiry investigating corruption under his predecessor.  The enquiry, known as the Zondo commission, was established to investigate the so-called “state capture” scandal during Jacob Zuma’s 9-year tenure. It involves allegations that the wealthy Gupta family used their friendship with Zuma to unfairly secure government contracts and to influence political decisions. Zuma and the Guptas deny any wrongdoing. Zuma has been refusing to testify. Ramaphosa was Zuma’s deputy from 2014 until Zuma was forced to step down in early 2018. He is due to testify on April 29 and May 13-14.
