Japan’s cabinet will make a formal decision on its plan to release treated radioactive water accumulated at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea despite local and international opposition.

The treated water containing radioactive tritium, a byproduct of nuclear reactors, is said to pose little risk to human health. Still, concerns remain among Japan’s fisheries industry and consumers as well as neighboring countries such as South Korea and China.
