The International Court of Justice is due to start hearing – virtually – the long-running maritime dispute between Kenya and Somalia. At stake is ownership over a triangular block of the Indian Ocean – 100,000sq km of the sea with prospects of vast oil and gas deposits. Kenya says the sea border should be drawn parallel to the line of latitude, Somalia says it should extend in the same direction as its land border.
The dispute has fuelled tensions between Kenya and Somalia, partners in the struggle against Al Shabab. Somalia asked the ICJ to make a ruling in
2014. Kenya has withdrawn from the hearing. It claims its legal team has been given inadequate time to prepare after the court declined its request to have the case postponed for a fourth time.
