Malawi/Preacher extradition

Published on: 8 March, 2021

One of southern Africa’s most controversial preachers is due in court for extradition hearings. The Malawian government is trying to extradite Malawi-born Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary to South Africa to face trial.

Bushiri, a millionaire and self-proclaimed prophet, runs churches from Ghana to South Africa and has drawn crowds of 90,000+ to his open-air gatherings.  He and his wife are wanted in South Africa on money laundering, theft, and fraud charges. They fled the country last November, claiming their lives were in danger and that they would not receive a fair trial. South Africa’s government applied to its Malawian counterpart to have them sent back.
