More than 400 Viwa indigenous people have been forcibly displaced from their territory this week as illegal armed group fight for control of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Northern Colombia; an area that had not seen violence since the signing of the peace deal in 2016.
This is the latest in a number of crises since the beginning of the year, as there’s been an increase in violence despite President Gustavo Petro’s efforts to achieve peace with illegal armed group such as guerrillas and criminal bands.
On Wednesday, the UN mission in the country published a report saying that armed groups have increased their control over Colombia’s territory, with a 14,4% increase in towns suffering from violence. Human Rights Organizations are calling for protection of the Viwa.
