UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Colombian presidential candidate and senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died two months after being shot during a campaign rally in Bogotá on 7 June.
Türk emphasized the importance of ensuring that Colombia’s upcoming elections are free from violence and conducted in a safe and inclusive environment.
He stressed that campaigning must not be disrupted by violent or discriminatory speech.
The UN Human Rights Office in Colombia will continue supporting authorities and civil society to uphold human rights during the election period and beyond.
