Tunisians submit an application to the African Court

Published on: 24 May, 2023

The daughter of jailed Tunisian opposition leader, Rached Ghannouchi, is among a group of several children of detained prominent Tunisian opposition figures who submit an application today Wednesday to the African Court on Human
and People’s Rights in Arusha, Tanzania.

It is legally significant insofar as only six African countries have fully assented to the Court’s jurisdiction, one of which is Tunisia.

The applicants will ask the Court to order the release of political prisoners in Tunisia, on behalf of the detainees, and to find violations of the African Charter by the Tunisian government of President Kais Saied for its recent crackdown on Black African migrants.

The applicants will leave Arusha and continue on to Addis Ababa to the African Union.

Participants:
– Soumaya Ghannouchi, daughter of Rached Ghannouchi, Speaker of Parliament and leader of Ennahdha party (main
opposition party)
– Kaouther Ferjani, daughter of Said Ferjani MP, senior Ennahdha Party member.
– Jaza Cherif, son of Chaima Issa, civil society activist, and the first female political prisoner.
