The UN’s Crucial Role in Global Governance

15 January, 2026

Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, highlights the increasing need for a robust United Nations (UN) amidst escalating global crises. She emphasizes that crises in Venezuela and Iran demand a strong multilateral response, characterizing the current moment as a “make-or-break” point for the UN.

Speaking to member states, Baerbock reiterated, “It is worth fighting for,” reinforcing the UN’s essential role in providing humanitarian aid in Gaza, advocating for girls’ education in Afghanistan, and addressing civilian protection in Sudan. The Assembly meets annually from September to December, with Baerbock committing to defend the UN Charter during her term.

Central to her agenda is the timely selection of the next UN Secretary-General, slated for December 2026, a process she urges member states to engage in proactively. She calls for the nomination of qualified women candidates, stating, “Our choice will tell whether this organization is truly serving all of humanity.” As the global landscape shifts, Baerbock emphasizes the necessity for international collaboration, stating, “We need someone who can chart a path to the future while defending our principles.”
