Contemporary authoritarian regimes are increasingly targeting women’s rights as a means of entrenching power. From Russia to Afghanistan, these governments systematically undermine gender equality while promoting regressive ideologies. The rising tide of authoritarianism is characterized by a deliberate assault on the rights of women and marginalized communities.
Leaders like Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have positioned gender norms as political tools, invoking traditionalist rhetoric to justify their policies. Afghanistan serves as a stark example of the consequences of this trend. Since the Taliban’s resurgence, women have been systematically barred from public life, including education and employment.
As authoritarianism spreads, the connection between women’s rights and democracy becomes increasingly clear. Protecting women’s autonomy is not only a matter of justice but a fundamental component of safeguarding democratic values.
