Sri Lankan Government is accused of undermining the rights of peaceful demonstrations and of expression during protests.
Sri Lanka’s population is suffering from rising inflation, scarcities of fuel, indispensable goods and power outage.
Last March demonstrations took place in front of the president’s residence, calling for his resignation over his mishandling of the economic crisis.
The deepened bearing of foreign debt, corruption and the COVID-19 epidemic has worsened Sri Lanka’s economy.
Human rights organisations called on the government to ensure that all human rights be protected.
Commenting on violence against demonstrators the UN Human Rights experts said “We condemn the excessive use of teargas and water cannon to disperse protesters, as well as the recent block of social media platforms. We urge the Sri Lankan Government to allow students, human rights defenders and others to protest in a peaceful manner, and to freely share their political views and express their discontent, both online and offline.”
