Spain’s high court summonsed Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali to appear on June 1 for charges to be issued in a war crimes case against him, according to a court document seen by Reuters.
It’s the first step toward a potential trial. Ghali, who is currently in hospital in northern Spain, declined to sign the summons, saying he had to refer to the Algerian embassy first, the document said.
Migrants are continuing to travel from Morocco to a Spanish enclave in North Africa – despite poor conditions there. Around 8,000 people have crossed into Ceuta by sea or by walking around the coast. The influx comes against the backdrop of soaring tensions with Morocco over Madrid’s decision to provide medical treatment for the leader of the Western Sahara independence movement, Polisario Front, who has been seriously ill with Covid-19.
Dozens have also reached Melilla, Spain’s other enclave. The European Union is urging Morocco to stop them. The Spanish government’s already sent back many of the recent arrivals.
