Mohammad Bakri, a leading figure in Palestinian cinema and theatre, died on Wednesday. Over a career spanning several decades, he appeared in dozens of stage and screen productions and directed the documentary Jenin, Jenin, released in 2002, which became one of the most contested Palestinian films. His funeral took place on Wednesday night.

Bakri’s influence cannot be measured only in titles or box office figures, but in the generations of artists shaped by his insistence that culture record occupation, memory, and identity alongside politics.
