Panama’s government will launch a new campaign in a bid to stem the flow of migrants through the dangerous, jungle-clad Darien Gap, after crossings hit 300,000 so far this year.

In comparison, less than 250,000 migrants crossed in all of 2022.

Panama’s Public Security Minister Juan Manuel Pino said that “the number of irregular migrants has reached a record level, we are in search of international cooperation.”

The plan, named “Darien is a jungle, not a road,” will be launched this week.

Panama blames slow efforts by the int’l community cooperation mechanisms and inadequate measures by Colombian authorities and said the possibility of closing the border is on the table.
