Minneapolis, Policing, and Border Agents

Accountability in question Vigils in Minneapolis followed the early-Saturday fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, 37, an intensive-care nurse, by a Border Patrol agent, prompting angry protests in Minneapolis and other US cities. Pretti’s parents have demanded answers after authorities said the agent shot in self-defence because Pretti possessed a firearm and ammunition; circulating videos, activists say, appear to contradict that account.
City and state officials condemned the killing, and Amnesty International said federal immigration agents “are not making our communities safer.” Governor Tim Walz activated the Minnesota National Guard to assist local police amid growing unrest. The incident is the third reported shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis in roughly two and a half weeks, coming just blocks from where a federal agent fatally shot Renée Good, 37, on Jan. 7.
The episode has escalated tensions over use-of-force, federal policing and oversight of immigration agents.
