Malta and Libya hold joint naval drills to curb migration/Aljazeera
Libya’s coast guard is holding naval drills with Malta’s coast guard, aimed at curbing migration across the Mediterranean.
Today, Monday is the main day of the drills.
Tripoli agreed to collaborate with Valletta in 2020 in patrolling for migrants crossing from Libya.
Both sides say they have cut the numbers making it to Malta.
Those caught or rescued invariably are sent back to Libya.
The IOM and the UNHCR have condemned their return, saying Libya should not be considered a safe place for disembarkation as required by international maritime law.
