On Thursday, Aljazeera Center for Public Liberties and Human Rights is organising a seminar on the “Media and safety of journalists.”

The seminar will take place in the Palais des Nations, Geneve, Switzerland.

Catherine Fiankan-Bokonga, Vice-President of the Swiss Press Club will serve as a Moderator.

The seminar will focus on the following themes:

  • Safeguarding the safety of journalists, addressing the lack of thorough investigations, holding perpetrators accountable and preventing impunity.
  • A journalist is killed every five days according to UNESCO.
  • Impunity for crimes against journalists and the media professionals threatens the right to know, the right to press freedom and UN human rights-based efforts to promote peace, security and sustainable development.
  • Strengthening the co-operation on protecting journalists. There is an urgent need to adopt and implement international legislation that deals with crimes against journalists as war crimes.
