‘Little Amal’: A giant puppet with a powerful refugee message

Published on: 22 November, 2020

“Little Amal” is a giant puppet representing a nine-year-old refugee girl and she is set to travel almost 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) from the Turkey-Syria border to Europe to “rewrite the narrative about refugees”. Her journey will form a project called The Walk, to highlight the stories of refugee children.

She will set off from the Turkey-Syria border in April and will travel through Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and France before reaching the UK. Little Amal’s journey will end with a large-scale event at the Manchester International Festival in July 2021. The project’s artistic director Amir Nizar Zuabi said the purpose of The Walk was to highlight refugees’ potential, not only their dire plight. This video was edited by Al Jazeera Newsfeed’s Katya Bohdan.
