A handover of airport control began between the Taliban and U.S. forces on Saturday, with some areas of the airport
perimeter now in the group’s control.
The majority of the airport and its functioning is still run by U.S. forces.
The U.S. claims to be on track to finish its withdrawal by the August 31 deadline with an estimated 500 Americans still left
in Afghanistan as of Saturday.
But time is running out for thousands of increasingly desperate people in and around Kabul Airport.
Meanwhile, the Taliban has promised that people with legal documents will be able to travel on commercial flights after August 31.
France’s airlift and evacuation mission in Afghanistan ended Friday.
The UK says no more people will be called to the airport to leave, and the processing centres at Baron Hotel and airport gate are now closed.
