Indonesia’s military has been forced to apologise after footage emerged of a West Papuan man being apparently tortured in a water-filled barrel by soldiers.
The massive backlash has led to the detention of three military personnel with more than 40 questioned.
The videos were filmed in early February, during a military raid in a Central Papua province and show a man being punched, kicked in the face and lacerated with a machete while in a barrel of water that increasingly turned red.
Amnesty International says he later died from his injuries.
West Papua independence groups and human rights organisations accuse Indonesian security forces of brutality during their decade-long fight for an independent state.
