An Indonesian court announces verdict in a class-action lawsuit against several Indonesian pharmaceutical companies and govt agencies by 25 families of victims who either died or suffered after consuming tainted cough syrup between 2022 till late 2023.

Tainted samples examined by the public prosecutor’s office contained 96% to 99% ethylene glycol which is toxic.

Since 2022, more than 200 Indonesian children, most of whom were under the age of five, have died of acute kidney injury linked to contaminated cough syrup.

More than 100 were hospitalised with severe complications.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has since issued warnings about six cough syrups made in India and Indonesia.

Activists point to serious lapses by official watchdogs and the need to tighten regulatory oversight over 5 pharma companies and suppliers.
