Global Flotilla to Gaza Sets Sail from Spain
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), the most extensive civilian maritime mission to Gaza since the Israeli blockade began in 2007, has launched its first wave of boats from Spain, with additional departures set for September 4 from Tunisia and other countries. The effort brings together delegations from over 44 nations, including Malaysia, the United States, Brazil, Italy, Morocco, Sri Lanka, and Colombia.
Among the participants is climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was previously arrested and deported from Israel in June after joining a smaller Gaza-bound vessel, the Madleen. She is expected to board one of the boats departing from Barcelona.
Organisers describe the flotilla as a nonviolent challenge to the blockade and a direct show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, amid escalating violence and humanitarian collapse in the enclave.
