Jury selection begins in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin over the May 25 killing of George Floyd. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. Community members are expected to gather. The U.S. House last week began taking up H.R. 1289 – the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. President Joe Biden, civil rights organisations, and corporations have thrown their support behind the legislation that would ban chokeholds and overhaul qualified immunity protections for law enforcement. It includes measures to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, enhance transparency and data collection, and eliminate discriminatory policing practices. The measure would still have to go through the Senate.
