Storm Byron compounded Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, killing at least 14 people and injuring many more, according to local authorities. At least 13 buildings collapsed, and around 27,000 tents sheltering displaced families were flooded.
The International Organization for Migration estimates that nearly 795,000 displaced people remain at high risk of flooding, concentrated in low-lying, rubble-strewn areas with inadequate drainage and waste management. As sewage and rubbish floated through streets, fears of disease outbreaks.
Against this backdrop, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding full humanitarian access to Gaza and respect for the inviolability of UN premises. The vote was decisive, 139 in favour, 19 abstentions, and 12 against, including Israel and the United States, but, as so often, enforcement remains uncertain.
