The Hague: Judge Nawaf Salam will hand down the ICJ’s ruling in the case against Germany, which remains one of the strongest supporters of Israel’s principal arms suppliers.
Nicaragua wants the court issue emergency measures for Germany to stop its arms exports to Israel as well as to reverse its decision to suspend funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA.
Any Court ruling is binding but it has no enforcement mechanism.
Germany says Nicaragua’s not bringing the case in good faith or out of concern for people in Gaza but is acting as a proxy for Russian given it and Nicaragua are close allies.
Human Rights Groups say Nicaragua lacks the moral authority to bring such a case to the ICJ because of serious rights abuses by its authoritarian government.
Legal experts believe Nicaragua’s case is flawed because the ICJ has not already ruled conclusively that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
