A fragile ceasefire and the release of hostages have rekindled faint hopes for Gaza, but a UN expert warns that peace without justice will not last.

Bernard Duhaime, the UN’s rapporteur on transitional justice, urged that any settlement be rooted in accountability, truth-telling, and the recognition of Palestinian self-determination.

He criticised the current peace plan as vague, lacking clear mechanisms for prosecutions, reparations, or institutional reform.

Without a credible roadmap, he said, the process risks becoming hollow and sowing future unrest.

Duhaime also called for the protection of civil society groups documenting abuses and rejected any amnesty for war crimes or crimes against humanity.

True peace, he concluded, requires ending occupation, ensuring equality, and grounding reconciliation in dignity and justice for all.
