Free Mahmoud Hussein

Published on: 23 December, 2020

Mahmoud Hussein is a senior Al Jazeera journalist, who moved to Doha, Qatar, in 2013, after Al Jazeera Media Network’s operations were shut down by Egyptian authorities. Hussein traveled to Cairo to visit his family on December 19, 2016.

Upon his arrival at Cairo’s airport, he was questioned by security officials for more than 15 hours. He was later allowed to leave the airport and head home. However, on December 23, he was arrested at home by the authorities. Mahmoud continues to be under arbitrary detention without charges or trial for four years.

Since the arrest of Mahmoud Hussein, the Egyptian judiciary has continued to imprison him without any charges by extending his imprisonment every 45 days, breaching his fundamental rights.
