This Sunday marks the fifth anniversary of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man killed when a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Floyd’s death sparked months of Black Lives Matter protests across the United States and around the world, in what is considered one of the largest mass demonstrations in US history. Chauvin was subsequently sentenced to 22 years’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, MAGA influencers have been calling for Chauvin’s release. Former President Donald Trump has stated that he is unaware of any pardon under consideration. However, Governor Tim Walz, the Minnesota National Guard, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Attorney General Keith Ellison have all been alerted to the risk of potential unrest should the President grant a pardon.
