In February 2026 ministers in several European states called for Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, to resign after a truncated clip circulated of her Doha remarks on Feb 7, 2026. Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard condemned the attacks as rooted in disinformation and demanded public apologies and retractions from ministers in France, Czechia, Austria, Germany, and Italy.

Amnesty underscored the Special Rapporteur’s mandate to apply international law impartially and warned that silencing UN experts is a dangerous diversion from alleged Israeli violations in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank. States should defend the autonomy of UN human‑rights mechanisms, investigate how misleading clips spread, and prioritise accountability for alleged crimes rather than targeting experts.
