In accordance with HRW, Ethiopia’s authorities have revoked the license of Addis Standard, one of the few independent news outlets remaining.

This action comes just before significant elections, reflecting a broader trend of suppressing critical journalism that scrutinizes those in power.

A free press is essential for informing the public and ensuring that leaders are held accountable. Without it, the integrity of the electoral process is compromised, especially as tensions escalate in the lead-up to the polls.

Such measures undermine trust in democratic practices. Open media is vital for democracy to thrive, and the silence of dissenting voices ultimately harms the public interest.
