Diplomacy on Edge at the UN Over Gaza

10 August, 2025

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, diplomatic tensions over Israel’s expanding military campaign in Gaza are set to intensify. Five members of the UN Security Council, led by Slovenia, are scheduled to speak at a media stakeout, underscoring growing international unease.

An emergency session of the Security Council has been convened to address Israel’s recent announcement that it intends to occupy Gaza City—part of a broader plan to assert military control over the enclave. The move has provoked sharp criticism from several member states, who warn that further escalation could trigger regional destabilisation and deepen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

The Council has so far failed to produce a unified response to the war, with divisions—particularly between Western powers and Russia or China—stalling meaningful action. The coming days may test whether even symbolic consensus remains possible.
