Nearly two-thirds of surveyed children have experienced an uptick in cyberbullying.

In a troubling report unveiled at the Human Rights Council on March 10, 2026, the UN Special Representative on Violence Against Children indicates a stark reality for young internet users: nearly two-thirds of surveyed children have experienced an uptick in cyberbullying. Alarmingly, half of these young individuals are unaware of how to seek the support they need in such distressing circumstances.

The comprehensive study, which scrutinized the experiences of over 30,000 children, highlights a disturbing trend: the rise of generative AI tools is redefining the landscape of cyberbullying.

These technological advancements facilitate swift and devastating forms of harassment, including the creation of targeted deepfake content that can lead to public humiliation and emotional manipulation. Accompanying this phenomenon is a culture of stigma and fear that often silences victims, discouraging them from reporting incidents and seeking help.

In light of these pressing issues, experts argue that policy interventions must adopt a multifaceted approach. This involves the integration of rights-centered digital design, effective regulation of online platforms, the establishment of mandatory reporting processes, and the creation of frameworks that prioritize child-centered redress.

The stakes are immeasurably high; the consequences of neglecting these measures extend beyond emotional turmoil and can, in severe cases, result in tragic loss of life.

In an era where technology can empower and devastate, the call for a robust policy response has never been more critical. It is imperative that we commit to safeguarding the well-being of our youngest digital citizens.
