The situation may continue to worsen in Ndjamena where people have been filling sandbags in attempts to slow the record-breaking rising waters of the Chari River.

The capital was developed during droughts in the 1970s and 80s, making it vulnerable to floodwaters.

The previous highest water level for the Chari was recorded in 2022, during the country’s most severe rainfall since the 1960s.

Torrential rain has been impacting millions around the country since July, according to the UN, with more than 570 people killed.

It has been another devastating blow for one of the world’s poorest countries.
