The Court of Appeal in London rules on whether Britain’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is lawful, following a legal challenge by individuals facing deportation to the East African country.

In December 2022, judges found the government’s policy was lawful overall, but quashed the Home Office’s decisions to deport eight people selected for transfer to Kigali.

Several asylum seekers and charity groups mounted a challenge with legal representatives arguing that the “high-profile and controversial” policy was unlawful and that Rwanda was “an authoritarian one-party state” that “imprisons, tortures and murders” opponents.
