First vote in Parliament on a new Bill that would declare Rwanda as a safe place to send asylum seekers, something the government hopes will help deter people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Some MPs from the ruling Conservative party feel this new proposal does not go far enough and has already resulted in the resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick, sparking speculation Tuesday’s vote could be treated as a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The new law would aim to address the concerns of the UK’s highest court which last month ruled the government’s plans are unlawful.

In order to proceed, MPs must approve the Bill which orders the courts to ignore key sections of the Human Rights Act.
