Pakistani authorities intensified security operations across Balochistan on Sunday after the Balochistan Liberation Army launched coordinated gun and bomb attacks, claiming dozens of security casualties.
Provincial officials reported at least 145 attackers killed, alongside 31 civilian deaths and 17 security personnel fatalities, figures that underscore both the scale of the assault and the lethal response.
The army described ongoing sanitisation operations in targeted districts, but rights groups warn that mass security sweeps and curtailed civil liberties risk collective punishment, arbitrary detentions, and further displacement in an impoverished province with entrenched grievances.
Ensuring proportionality, investigating civilian casualties and safeguarding detainee rights are immediate human rights imperatives as the state seeks to restore order.
