UN Human Rights chief Michele Bachelet is wrapping up her visit to Bangladesh from 14-17 August.

Bachelet visited the Rohingya refugee camps at Cox’s Bazar.

“An estimated 1.1 million Rohingyas are in Bangladesh right now, meaning Cox’s Bazar, some of them in Bhashan char,” Ms. Bachelet said after visiting several sites inside a camp.

“The UN is doing the best we can to support them. We’ll continue doing that,” she said

“But we also need to deal with the profound roots of the problem. We need to deal with that and ensure that they can go back to Myanmar – when there are conditions for safety and voluntary return.”

AUG 25 marks five years since the Rohingya exodus from Myanmar, a flight triggered by a military crackdown UN investigators and the US have branded a genocide.

740,000 Muslim-majority Rohingya fled.

They’re kept behind barbed wire, under increasingly harsh conditions as Dhaka presses them to go home.

Other human rights abuse is also likely on the agenda.

Bachelet’s office in recent months has criticised PM Sheikh Hasana’s government for alleged human rights violations, particularly forced disappearances.

“During her stay in Dhaka, the top UN rights official met with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at the Government guest house, several ministers, and representatives of civil society organizations along with others. Yesterday she underscored that civic space and enabling conditions were key for society to play its crucial role in identifying and helping resolve #HumanRights challenges in the country,” the UN said.
